MAPPING THE PSYCHO-GEOGRAPHY OF THE LIMINAL EXPERIENCE IN TRANSIT THROUGH SINGAPORE

This series started in January 2016, when Julie Andrews undertook a one-month collaborative residency in Singapore. This residency offered an opportunity for artists to explore ‘the little red dot’ on the world map and develop work in response to their experience of Singapore.

During the residency Julie Andrews sought opportunities to explore the psychological and physical terrain of the location and to take advantage of the reflective studio time offered in a printmaking studio and a painting studio on either side of the country.  Working between these two studios required a lot of time commuting at the beginning and end of the day. The process was a type of Psycho-geographic mapping, through walking the city to engage with its public spaces and to commute between studios, to produce this body of work that emerged from the strange, liminal and transient space of a residency.

This body of work started in 2016 while undertaking the residency in Singapore and was completed in the artist’s studio in Maiden Gully in 2020. Julie Andrews has undertaken similar residencies in Melbourne, Australia, Newcastle, England and Shanghai, China. All these projects involved a journey and residency which provided concentrated time and a phenomenological catalyst for the work.
